developers dream brought to life

David Truong

Master Developer/Owner

In addition to being some of the most modern up and coming townhomes in the Salt Lake Valley, Twenty One Lofts are a testament to fortitude. Developers David and Vi Truong understand better than most what it means to have a dream, and what it means to achieve it.

David and Vi arrived in the United State independently as refugees from Vietnam in 1982 and 1978 respectively.  Each left their home country with their families and nothing else. They each boarded a stranger’s boat and hoped for the best. The US Navy found their boats at sea. They were taken to refugee camps in Guam and ultimately ended up in America. David made it to California. Vi reached Illinois.

Vi’s family moved to California where she met David in high school. After high school they moved to Salt Lake City where David studied Pharmacy at the University of Utah. Vi’s family came to Salt Lake a few years later and opened a nail salon in Trolley Square called California Nails, where Vi was the business manager.
Over the next few years the Truong’s opened salons in the Fashion Place, Crossroads and South Town Malls. With a desire to grow their company they found that a competitor had a few hundred salons in stores owned by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. They contacted Walmart with a desire to open their salons in a similar way and were immediately rejected. Not taking “no” for an answer, they asked repeatedly. After four years of trying, Walmart gave them an opportunity to open a store in Brigham City, Utah.

The family took a chance! They had never been to Brigham City, and did not know it was such a small market.  They were no strangers to hardship and plunged into the market. It was their fifth business location. Their new salon was a success and Walmart offered several more opportunities. Now the Truong’s own one of the world’s largest nail salon chains with more than 500 stores. They just keep growing.

David and Vi have diversified into real estate development their company, Truong Properties. Truong properties is now building around 100 homes per year and is preparing to build high rise condominiums in Sandy Utah.

With thousands of people employed in their nail salon chain and real estate development companies, the Truongs have come to America and have made a huge impact for good while becoming  the epitome of the American dream. Welcome to Lofts on Redwood, congratulations on achieving your dream.

Russ Platt

Simple, but not simplistic. That’s how architectural modernist Russell Platt defines his design theory. The experienced and internationally-lauded designer’s style is reflected in one of his latest Utah multi-family communities, Twenty One Lofts.

“These homes are designed to each have some really good private space,” Russell said.  Russell is collaborating on the project with developer David Truong. Each has a roof deck and a carefully-thought out view corridor to include breathtaking mountains, valleys and lakes surrounding the project’s urban location. While privacy is a premium commodity, so is the prime location and this project features plenty of both.

Russ Platt Architecture

Twenty One Lofts are designed to be simple, functional and flooded with natural light.

Russell has had plenty of time to consider the area in which this project is being built. In fact, he and his wife, Mary Kay, are raising four children on a 4-acre ranchette nearby.

Following in Father’s Footsteps

Throughout his youth, Russell accompanied his architect father, Lloyd E. Platt, to the office where he developed a keen interest in the creative process that helps shapes communities and impacts the way people live their lives. He enjoyed building models and assisting his father with projects in Utah and California.

He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in business administration at Westminster, a liberal arts college in Salt Lake City. He later studied at the University of Utah where he earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in architecture. Russell went on to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Pepperdine University in California.

Making His Mark

Russell worked full-time throughout college with his father and for FFKR Architects, a Utah-based architectural and interior design company; and GSBS Architects in Salt Lake City.

As manager of architectural design for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, Russell designed the church’s Redlands, Calif. and Newport Beach, Calif. Temples.

The Utah-based architect is now designing the first four high-rise condominiums outside of downtown Salt Lake City in Sandy.

With a wide variety of building types to his credit including residential, commercial, public and private masterpieces, Russell boasts an international flare too. For the past 20 years he has maintained an architecture office in Cebu, Philippines. He recently closed the international branch of his thriving business, “I am fortunate enough now not to have to leave the area.”
